A night terror is a sleep disturbance that occurs in about five per cent of children. They happen in the deepest part of the night and are often very scary.

Your child may suddenly bolt upright, cry, scream or talk gibberish in the middle of the night. They won’t usually respond to a parent trying to calm them down.

Lift-the-Flap Nighty-Night

Lift-the-flap nighty-night books are a great way for young children to enjoy a bedtime story. They are sturdy enough to withstand kid-tugging and the flaps are big and easy for little hands to grab hold of.

A sweet board book about saying goodnight to the animals of the world, this book has a gentle rhyme that will help little ones to get to sleep. Lift each flap to find a beautiful picture of animals tucked up for the night.

This fun lift-the-flap book shows an animal tucked in for the night under a red felt flap. It’s unlikely to tear but the flaps aren’t especially soft or cuddly, and it doesn’t really engage toddlers in trying to guess which animal is hiding underneath.

This is another lovely addition to the Good Night series, which celebrates special places and subjects in a way that makes them accessible to young children. A beautiful way to say goodnight and give thanks for the things that make us happy, this is a lovely book to read together in bed.

Bedtime Story

Bedtime stories are a wonderful way to build your child’s imagination and boost their creativity. They also help children to master abstract thinking skills and develop their language skills.

There are a variety of bedtime books that are suitable for both babies and toddlers. Some are about the topic of bedtime, others have a soothing colour palette or rhythm that lulls little ones to sleep.

One of our favourite bedtime stories is The Ugly Duckling, which teaches kids to be kind to each other. It is a simple story about a grey duck that was judged ugly by the other birds on the farm, but whose life is changed when it receives kindness from a farmer.
